Encounter
by Jasmine Lee '17
My friend and I walk along the road,
enjoying the quiet peace of the
thick forest next to us.
A lone owl on a low branch hooted softly.
we turned our heads curiously and watched him.
I was lost in his intelligent, but lonely eyes
Suddenly, a loud snort jarred us back to reality
A large stag stood by a tree, nostrils flaring,
eyes gleaming oh-so-maliciously
I gasped as more appeared.
These deer were smaller, but
they too watched the owl menacingly.
The large stag charged towards the owl,
who let out a startled hoot of protest! Hoo Hoooo!
Each hoof beat rang through my head ominously.
The other deer snorted in delight,
pawing at the ground in encouragement.
The owl frantically flapped its wings, but
The stag was too fast. Its antlers were soon covered
In stray feathers, and blood stained the bird’s
beautiful plumage. The owl hooted sadly.
Its eyes still knowing, but sad
Its beautiful feathers still magnificent, but stained
It rose feebly as the deer trotted away gleefully.
They pass in front of us to cross the road.
I turn my head. A car is hurtling towards us.
The owl let out a warning hoot.
He, the clever, but lonely owl, knew.
They, the dumb, but well-acquainted deer, knew not.
The deer continued forward ignorantly
Collision. The large stag screamed and collapsed,
blood staining the already dull, ugly coat,
life fading out of the “popular” stag.
“Popular”: fake. Absence of something to be secure about. Incapable, incompetent
